Norms provide the ability to constrain behaviour while preserving individual agent autonomy. While much work has focused on the semantics of norms, the design of normative systems, and in particular understanding the impact of norms on a system, has received little attention. Since norms often interact with each other (for example, a permission may temporarily derogate an obligation, or a prohibition and obligation may conflict), understanding the effects of norms and their interactions becomes increasingly difficult as the number of norms increases. Yet this understanding can be critical in facilitating the design and development of effective or efficient systems. In response, this paper addresses the problem of norm explanation for Naïve users by providing of a graphical norm representation that can explicate why a norm is applicable, violated or complied with, and identify the interactions between permissions and other types of norms. We adopt a conceptual graph based semantics to provide this graphical representation while maintaining a formal semantics. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Understanding Permissions through Graphical Norms

Norm-aware agents are able to reason about the obligations, permissions and prohibitions that affect their operation. While much work has focused on the creation of such norm-aware agents, less effort has been placed on enabling system designers and users to understand the interactions between norms. Providing designers with such an understanding can aid in eliminating redundant norms and error...

GET: An Implementation of Conceptual Graphs

This paper describes GET (Graph Editor and Tools), a partial implementation of Sowa's conceptual structures. First, a brief overview of X-Prolog, an X-Windows based Prolog programming environment, is given. A summary of GET's graphical interface and linear notation follows. Finally, an example application using the graphs to represent sentences in Portuguese will be presented.

Handling Specification Knowledge Evolution Using Context Lattices

Internet-based information technologies have considerable potential for improving collaboration in professional communities. In this paper, we explain the concept of user-driven specification of network information systems that these communities require, and we describe some problems related to finding the right focus for adequate user involvement. A methodological approach to the management of...

1GRIP: Toward a Standard GUI for Conceptual Structures

A major advantage of conceptual graphs is their ease of use in the graphical form. This paper is intended to present some general guidelines for building a suitable conceptual graph interface and the details of a particular implementation currently under development. The resulting software is to be completely integrated with the existing PEIRCE code, built to conform with the PEIRCE standards o...
